CERAMICA :: Class 3 & 3 1/2

Pues bien, despues de hacer nuestras vasijas las pusimos en el horno, donde cocieron por unas 8 horas (el fuego fue de lento a fuerte y de ahi, a lento) y luego enfriaron por 24 horas, asi que estuvieron listas para ser pintadas!! Las pintamos de adentro hacia afuera, uno puede usar cualquier tecnica, desde usando brochas y pinceles hasta sumergiendo la vasija en la pintura. El secreto es no poner ni mucha ni poca pintura, pues si es poca no tiene el efecto deseado y si es mucha se cocinara con burbujas o simplemente se desprendera de la superficie! :P No tenemos fotos de nuestra pintada... asi que tendran que utilizar su imaginacion!

Una vez pintadas, las vasijas secaron y otra vez fueron puestas al horno, basicamente pasando por el mismo proceso: una vez que la coccion termino, entran a un proceso de enfriamiento y luego se abre el horno un poquito para que comiencen a recibir oxigeno y a enfriar. Tomamos una foto del horno recien abierto y luego cuando lo abrimos completamente... aun asi, hay que esperar bastante. La pintura tiene particulas de arena o cristales que se convierten en vidrio, dandole ese toque que todas las ceramicas tienen.

Well, after we made our pots and were dry, we placed them in the kiln were they cooked for about 8 hours (the fire went slowly higher and then cooled down slowly back) and they were left to cool down for about 24 hours, so they were now ready to be glazed!! We glazed them from inside out, you may use any technique: from bruses to submerging them or splashing them -well, that was my understanding- and the secret is to not use too much glaze or too little of it, so it looks good! We don't have pictures of our glazing .. but you can use your imagination to picture us doing it! ;)

Once the glaze was dry, they were fired in the kiln basically under the same procedure: once fired they had to be cooled down and the kiln is cracked (slightly open the lid) and then cooled. We took pictures of the kiln cracked and then fully opened... you have to wait quite a bit though! The glaze used has some crystals that become like a glass sheer on top of the ceramic, giving a wonderful touch!

Russian Dinner :: Cena Rusa

Tonight we had a Russian Dinner, basically Nancy (Nuri's mom) made Russian black bread and a soup called Borsh and we all enjoyed it, and when we say all, that is not only the family but all the campers and counselors, and the director here at the Conserve!! We also had Paul and Anastasia as special guests, and once dinner was over, the youth went for a soccer game! :) That is why in our group picture the youth are missing.

Hoy tuvimos una Cena Rusa, y toda la comida fue preparada por Nancy (la mama de Nuri), ella hizo pan negro Ruso y una sopa llamada Borsh para todos nosotros, y esto quiere decir TODOS: la familia y los que estan trabajando y estudiando en el campamento que tiene la escuela! Tambien el amigo de Nuri, Paul, y su esposa Anastasia vinieron como invitados especiales, y ni bien terminamos de cenar, los jovenes se fueron a jugar futbol! :) Por eso es que no tenemos fotos de los jovenes.

KABAB!

While with Nuri's parents we had wonderful food cooked by Nancy, and a couple of days we decided to try to make some kabab for the family. One day we had chicken kabab and today we made turkey kabab... they turned out very good!

En nuestra estadia con los padres de Nuri hemos comido riquisimo con la comida de Nancy y un par de ocasiones decidimos tratar de hacerles kabab! Un dia hicimos kabab de pollo y hoy hicimos de pavo... nos salieron riquisimos!!

4th of July: Arlyss Birthday

The 4th of July is the Independence Day of the United States, as well, it is the birthday of Arlyss, someone that Nuri and his family are very close to, and who consider as an adopted grandmother. She and her husband, Charles, live in Ewen, in the Upper Penninsula, and have seen Nuri and his siblings grow up since the mid-1980s.

On the 4th of July we went to one of her son's cabin to celebrate her birthday, Nancy made two amazing pies, and there her family (the Waters) made incredible food! Here are some pictures of us with birthday girl... and then the food ;)




As part of her presents, we all sang for her the song "Few of My Favorite Things" that Julie Andrews sang for a gathering, where the words were changed to express her favorite things now that she is getting older. It was amazingly beautiful!!

El 4 de julio es el Dia de la Independencia para los Estados Unidos. A la vez es el dia que Arlyss cumple anios, quien es muy cercana a la familia de Nuri y considerada como una abuelita por los chicos. Ella y su esposo Charles viven en Ewen, en Michigan. Ayer fuimos a celebrar su cumpleanios en la cabania de uno de sus hijos, comimos riquisimo, la mama de Nuri hizo unos pasteles y como uno de los regalos todos le cantamos una cancion que Julie Andrews canto, adaptando la letra de "Algunas de mis Cosas Favoritas" a las cosas favoritas de una persona de edad! Estuvo buenisimo!!!

La primer foto es de nosotros con los jovenes de la familia y la cumpleaniera, la segunda es de la mesa, la tercera donde todos cantabamos y la ultima es Nancy con Arlyss.

CERAMICA :: Class 2

Yesterday and today our pottery lesson was on how to trim the bottom of the ceramic pieces. We need sharp tools and a sturdy hand to do this job!

Ayer y hoy dia aprendimos en nuestra clase de ceramica como recortar la base de nuestros objetos. Necesitamos para ello el uso de instrumentos puntiagudos y filosos, y una mano firme.





Nuri learned pottery when he was a young kid (somewhere between 9 and 13 years old) and he is very good at trimming, he also made some pots and trimmed them today with the ones we did today.

Nuri aprendio ceramica cuando era bien joven (algo entre 9 y 13 anios) y es super bueno en recortar las bases, como el tambien hizo algunas vasijas hoy trabajo en ellas, asi como nosotras.

CERAMICA :: Class 1

Last Thursday Leila had her first pottery class with Mom (Nancy) on the wheel...

El pasado jueves Leila tuvo su primera clase con Nancy de ceramica usando la rueda...



The first step is to center a ball of clay on the wheel. It seems easy, but it takes practice to learn what exactly that means and how to do it perfectly. If it is not centered, the walls of the piece are going to be uneven.

El primer paso es centrar un bolo de barro sobre la rueda. Parece facil, pero toma algo de practica aprender lo que esto implica exactamente y como lograrlo perfectamente. Si no queda centrado, las paredes del objeto tendran diferente grosor.





Using water and a sponge, the hands (and few other tools) the walls are pulled up and the object takes a desired shaped, like a plate, a cup, a vase, a bowl or anything you can think of.

Utilizando agua y una esponja, las manos (y algunos otros instrumentos) se levantan las paredes y el objeto toma una forma deseada, como un plato, vaso, jarra, fuente o cualquier otro objeto.

Also on Tuesday was Aunt Sue's birthday!! (Nuri's Dad's sister)
That evening we went to celebrate a surprise birthday party for Aunt Sue prepared by her friend Susan. It was really nice, we had a yummy dinner prepared by her friends, a delicious cake and played pool.

Esa noche fuimos a celebrar una fiesta sorpresa para la Tia Sue organizada por su amiga Susan. Fue realmente lindo, comimos una rica cena preparada por sus amigos, una deliciosa torta y jugamos billard.






Aunt Sue is a very talented artist, she does wood burning and at the bar-restaurant we went, we had the chance to see one of her works on the table top...

Flowers in the woods :: Las flores en el bosque

Last Tuesday Nuri's grandparents came for a visit. We went with Grandpa for a walk and took nice pictures, especially of the "fox-glove" flower. It is really an amazing flower!

El pasado martes los abuelos de Nuri vinieron de visita. Fuimos con el Abuelito a un paseo y tomamos lindas fotos, en especial de las flore llamadas "guantes de zorro". Es realmente una flor bellisima!

Farewell to Daniel :: Despedida de Daniel

Daniel, Nuri's brother, was staying with his parents for a little while, and when we came up North he left to Davenport, Iowa, where he will be studying. Here are some pictures with his "cargo"!
